Example 9

Find the cost of carpeting a room 9 m long and 7 m wide at $4.75 per square metre.

Solution:

So, the cost of carpeting the room is $299.25.

Example 10

A pebble path 1 m wide is to be laid around a square swimming pool as shown.  The quote to supply and lay the pebble mix is $13 per square metre.

Calculate:
a. the area of the path
b. the cost of the path.

Solution:

a.   For the inner square, we have:

s = 19 m

      For the outer square, we have:

s = 19 + 1 + 1 = 21 m

Note:

The length and width of a rectangle should be expressed in the same units when calculating the area.

Example 11

A brick path 1 m wide is to be laid around a rectangular flower-bed as shown.  The quote to supply and lay the bricks is $12 per square metre.

Calculate:
a.  the area of the path
b.  the cost of the path.
